A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE EARLVILLE FREE LIBRARY:
While our library has been closed by executive order since Wednesday, March 18, the work of the library and the board has continued remotely. We are excited and supportive of a phased-in re-opening plan in line with state guidelines and with public health at the forefront.
We are mindful of the losses we have experienced in our community and the difficulties faced by many families in our area as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is with this in mind that we, as a board, have agreed not to pursue an increase in library funding as a part of the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District budget vote scheduled for Tuesday, June 9. We are so grateful for our patrons and all the support hardworking taxpayers have provided to both the school district and the library. In these uncertain times, we do not wish to increase this burden on our neighbors who may be struggling to make ends meet.
Foregoing this increase represents a substantial loss of funding for the library’s already-modest budget. This effect will be compounded by the fact that several planned 2020 fundraising efforts, including our annual tea party and summer book sale, have been cancelled.
In addition, we have continued to pay library staff for their full scheduled hours during the closure to minimize the effects on their households and our community. Our building expenses have remained steady. However, we are committed to finding a way forward and will continue to manage the library’s funds with sensible stewardship.
As we return to full service, we plan to bring technology access, training, new materials, events and programming back to the community with the same quality customer service patrons have come to expect from the Earlville Free Library.
If you are in a position to make a monetary donation to the library to help us improve our current budget outlook, please consider doing so generously.
Donations can be mailed to the library at PO Box 120, Earlville, NY, 13332, or you can email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a donation drop-off or pickup.
We also encourage you to exercise your right to vote via absentee ballot for the June 9 budget. We hope to see you back at the Earlville Free Library soon!
